What's Actually in Our Mineral Sunblock (And Why It Matters)
When it comes to sun protection, not all sunscreens are created equal — and the ingredient list tells the whole story. At Island Natural, we believe you deserve to know exactly what you're putting on your skin (and your family's skin) before heading out into the Maui sun.
The Active Ingredient: Zinc Oxide
Our mineral sunblock relies on non-nano zinc oxide as its sole active ingredient. Unlike chemical sunscreens that absorb UV rays and convert them to heat, zinc oxide sits on top of the skin and physically reflects and scatters both UVA and UVB rays. Non-nano means the particles are large enough that they don't penetrate the skin — keeping protection on the surface where it belongs.
Why We Skip the Chemicals
Many conventional sunscreens contain oxybenzone, octinoxate, and other chemical UV filters that have raised concerns for both human health and marine ecosystems. Hawaii was the first state to ban oxybenzone and octinoxate in sunscreens sold in the state — and for good reason. These chemicals have been linked to coral bleaching and disruption of marine life. Our formula is reef-safe by design, not as an afterthought.
The Supporting Cast
Beyond zinc oxide, every ingredient in our sunblock is chosen with intention:
- Tallow (grass-fed, grass-finished) — A deeply nourishing base rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Tallow is biocompatible with human skin and absorbs beautifully without clogging pores.
- Beeswax — Creates a breathable, water-resistant barrier that helps the sunblock stay put during outdoor activities.
- Coconut oil — Adds slip for easy application and provides additional skin-conditioning benefits.
- Jojoba oil — Technically a liquid wax, jojoba closely mimics the skin's natural sebum, making it an ideal carrier that absorbs quickly and balances moisture.
- Papaya seed oil — A rare and luxurious oil with a silky, fast-absorbing texture that helps the formula melt effortlessly into the skin while delivering nourishing fatty acids.
- Carrot seed oil — A luxury botanical rich in beta-carotene and antioxidants, known for its skin-rejuvenating and protective properties.
- Raspberry seed oil — Cold-pressed and nutrient-dense, raspberry seed oil is prized for its high concentration of omega fatty acids and natural antioxidants that support skin health.
A Formula That Melts In
One of the most common complaints about mineral sunscreens is that they feel heavy, greasy, or leave a white cast. We formulated ours differently. The combination of jojoba, papaya seed, carrot seed, and raspberry seed oils gives our sunblock a skin-melting quality — it glides on smoothly and absorbs without the thick, chalky feel you might expect from a zinc-based product.
What You Won't Find
No parabens. No synthetic fragrances. No PEGs. No oxybenzone or octinoxate. No nanoparticles. We keep the ingredient list short and purposeful because your skin doesn't need a chemistry experiment — it needs real, recognizable nourishment.
Made on Maui, With Aloha
Every batch of our mineral sunblock is handcrafted in small batches in Maui, Hawaii. We live here. We swim in these waters. We have every reason to care about what goes on our skin and into the ocean. That's not a marketing line — it's the foundation of everything we make.
