The Ingredients We Chose and Why: Herbals & Essential Oils at Island Natural
By Island Natural Skincare | Handcrafted in Maui, Hawaii
When I started formulating Island Natural Skincare, I wasn't looking for trendy ingredients. I was looking for ones that worked — ingredients with a history of use, a story behind them, and science to back them up. Every oil and botanical in our products was chosen deliberately. Here's why these five are at the heart of what we do — and they're just the beginning.
Blue Tansy: The Rare Oil That Calms Everything Down
Blue tansy (Tanacetum annuum) is one of the most striking ingredients in natural skincare — literally. Here's something most people don't know: the flowers themselves are small, round, button-like yellow blooms. The deep cobalt-blue color that blue tansy is famous for comes from chamazulene, a compound formed during steam distillation that's known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and skin-calming properties. The plant transforms in the process — and so does your skin.
I chose blue tansy because it does something most ingredients can't: it addresses redness, irritation, and sensitivity without stripping or overwhelming the skin. For anyone dealing with reactive skin, eczema flares, or post-sun inflammation, it's a quiet powerhouse.
It's rare, it's potent, and a little goes a long way — which is exactly the kind of ingredient Island Natural is built around.
Skin benefits: Anti-inflammatory, calming, helps reduce redness and irritation, supports barrier repair.
Frankincense: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Results
Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) has been used in healing and skincare rituals for thousands of years — and for good reason. Its active compounds, boswellic acids, have been studied for their ability to support skin cell regeneration and reduce the appearance of fine lines and uneven tone.
What drew me to frankincense was its versatility. It works beautifully on mature skin, on scarring, and on skin that needs a little extra support in renewing itself. It also has a grounding, resinous scent that feels intentional — not perfume-y, but present.
In our formulations, frankincense brings both function and depth. It's the kind of ingredient that rewards long-term use.
Skin benefits: Supports cell regeneration, improves skin tone and texture, helps reduce the appearance of scars and fine lines, antioxidant-rich.
Coffee Oil: More Than a Morning Ritual
Cold-pressed from coffee beans, coffee oil is one of the most antioxidant-dense oils available for skincare. It's rich in linoleic acid and cafestol — compounds that help protect skin from oxidative stress, support the lipid barrier, and improve circulation.
Coffee oil was a natural fit for Island Natural because it bridges two worlds: the familiar, comforting scent of coffee and the serious skin-nourishing benefits of a high-quality botanical oil. It absorbs well, doesn't feel heavy, and pairs beautifully with tallow's fatty acid profile.
It's also one of the reasons our Coffee Vanilla Whipped Tallow Balm smells exactly like what it is — real ingredients, real scent, nothing synthetic.
Skin benefits: High in antioxidants, supports barrier function, improves circulation, helps protect against environmental stressors.
Orange Oil: Brightening, Balancing, Uplifting
Cold-pressed from orange peel, orange essential oil brings more than its cheerful scent to the formula. It's rich in limonene and vitamin C precursors, which support collagen synthesis and help brighten uneven skin tone over time.
I included orange oil because it balances. It lifts the mood of a formula — both literally in scent and functionally for skin that looks dull or tired. It also has natural antimicrobial properties, which complement tallow's already clean, preservative-free profile.
Used at the right concentration, it's energizing without being irritating — and it makes every application feel like a small ritual.
Skin benefits: Brightening, supports collagen synthesis, antimicrobial, helps even skin tone, uplifting aromatherapy benefit.
Calendula: The Gentle One
Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is the ingredient I reach for when skin needs the most care. Infused into olive oil through a slow, cold process, calendula releases its flavonoids and triterpenoids — compounds with well-documented anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties.
It's the ingredient I'd recommend to anyone with sensitive skin, babies, eczema, or skin that's been through something — sun, stress, or just the wear of daily life. It doesn't do anything dramatic. It just quietly helps skin do what it's designed to do: heal.
Our calendula-infused olive oil is made in small batches and used as a base in all of our whipped tallows and lotion bars. It's one of the ingredients I'm most proud of.
Skin benefits: Anti-inflammatory, supports wound healing and skin repair, deeply soothing for sensitive and reactive skin, intensely moisturizing, and gentle enough for all skin types.
Why These Ingredients?
These aren't random ingredients pulled from a trend report. They're a considered set — each one chosen for what it contributes to the whole. Together they address inflammation, aging, barrier support, brightness, and sensitivity. They work in harmony with grass-fed tallow's biocompatible fatty acids, and they're all ingredients you can actually research, pronounce, and understand. As Island Natural grows, so will this list — we're always exploring botanicals and oils that meet our standard: nothing we can't explain, nothing we wouldn't use ourselves.
